Patterns of Obsession

"Patterns of Obsession" investigated Claes Gabriel’s and Andrew Chalfen’s unconventional approach to painting and color. Gabriel is a Philadelphia-based artist from Port-au-Prince, Haiti. His hand-stretched canvas masks and sculptures reference Haitian culture and his own imagined tales. Chalfen is a self-taught artist who paints meticulous, intensely patterned works of art that are inspired by aerial views, architectural renderings, and other natural and man-made patterns. Although distinct in style, both Gabriel’s and Chalfen’s designs, layering, and color use reflected the obsessive patterning found within Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens.
