About Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens

Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens (PMG) is an art museum, community arts centre, and an art environment that is covered entirely in mosaics. PMG’s founding artist, Isaiah Zagar, has been working in this style of mosaics since 1968, and has covered over 200 public and private walls, alleyways, and buildings throughout Philadelphia. Zagar started building Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens in 1991, and it continues to be a work in progress.

The space consists of two indoor galleries, a fully mosaicked basement, and a bi-level mosaicked labyrinth for people to explore.

As an art environment, Zagar built walls, archways, and paths that contain personal anecdotes, folk art collaborations with people he’s met from his travels around the world, influences of other art environment builders, and tributes to historical figures in the art world.

As a museum, PMG exhibits the works of local, national, and international artists whose art responds to the space and who create a world of their own. PMG is experienced by over 165,000 visitors annually.
