Alla Abajo/Down Below

A Reaction to Our Times

"Allá Abajo/Down Below" was a visual response to Philadelphia by artist Ornella Ridone. She was the first recipient of the Julia Zagar Residency for Women Artists, a program that supports contemporary female artists working in the tradition of handcrafting and folk art. Ridone, who lives in Oaxaca, Mexico, was invited to stay in Philadelphia in early 2017. Her pieces, all sewn on discarded clothing, featured stories from both Mexican and American residents, and illustrated the complex, multilayered relationship between the two countries.
